Bird Poster
ABC and the National Geographic Society have produced the first ever map of Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in the United States. The Globally Significant IBAs were identified by ABC’s scientists, in consultation with hundreds of biologists and wildlife managers across the country. Each site has been carefully documented, and the project will also result in a major publication with full details on bird populations and conservation issues at each IBA. In addition to the IBAs themselves, the map also depicts Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs), which are larger landscapes designated for their unique habitats and bird populations. By developing conservation partnerships in these regions, and fully protecting all the IBAs, the U.S. can make a huge step towards conserving bird populations for the future. Similar projects are also underway in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The map is printed in full color, with each IBA depicted and labeled. There is also more information about the IBA program , and attractive illustrations of several bird species from ABC’s field guide, All the Birds of North America by HarperCollins. The dimensions are 22" x 37". Other partners in the IBA project include the American Birding Association, the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, Partners in Flight, the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, and the U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan.

The Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE) is a global initiative of 62 biodiversity conservation organizations, which aims to prevent extinctions by identifying and safeguarding key sites around the world that are the last strongholds for one or more Endangered or Critically Endangered species. The goal of the Alliance is to create a frontline of defense against extinction by eliminating threats and restoring habitat to allow species populations to rebound. See www.zeroextinction.org for more details. The map illustrates all 595 sites identified by the Alliance that contain the last significant populations of 794 species of mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, and coniferous plant. The reverse side of the map contains a full site and species key by region.
